Pittsburgh
Tubular Shafting, Inc. ("PTS") designs,
manufactures, and engages in research and development
projects relating to tubular products. PTS holds
a patent on its tubular fan shaft product supplied
to the HVAC industry and has gained a position
in the tubular roll market with an innovative
single piece roll used in the agricultural, glass,
board and papers, furnace, textile, printing,
and specialty machine industries. Pittsburgh
Tubular Shafting also designs and manufactures
original equipment components
for the automotive (truck) industry for both
on and off highway manufacturers and holds a
patent on a telescoping steering column. The
PTS approach is to design and manufacture tubular
parts to a near net shape, including the finishing
to the net shape required.
Facilities:
PTS operates from three buildings totaling 105,000
sq. ft. on approximately 8 acres of land in
Rochester Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
Facilities
are of structural steel and masonry construction employing five overhead
cranes for loading and unloading, 14 docks or truck door openings and is
serviced by common carriers.
Employees:
PTS employs approximately 46 employees, of which 75% are factory workers. There
is no union representation. All employees are remunerated through a basic
rate plus a group shared bonus plan, paid monthly, based on productivity.
Pittsburgh
Tubular Shafting's Position in the Industry
PTS is but one of perhaps 20 manufacturers that do custom forming and roll
forming, however, PTS distinguishes itself by virtue of the range of sizes
offered plus
the secondary
machining, grinding, slotting and coating not known to be offered by other
tubular shaft and roll manufacturers. In a word, PTS has become a responsible
single source from concept to production.
Shafting,
Roll, and Custom Products
Pittsburgh Tubular Shafting has developed a custom computerized engineering
design program for shafting and rolls of most any description. This service
has been
widely
used
and accepted
by the roster of customers Pittsburgh Tubular Shafting now services.
TODAY'S
SHAFT/ROLL INDUSTRY - TRUCK INDUSTRY
Historically,
shafting was thought to be solid steel bars -
machined and/or ground. Tubular or hollow shafting
has added new dimensions for designers, as tubular
shapes act as beams able to span long lengths
without intermediate supports, thereby, substantially
reducing costs for intermediate supports and
intermediate bearings. PTS has perfected a tubular
shaft where the journals that support and drive
the tubular "beam" are rotary forged
or swaged from the tube itself - the parent metal.
Similarly,
PTS rolls are also made to a single piece configuration.
Designers of conveying systems appreciate the
one piece design as it removes the potential
failure element present with rolls designed from
multiple components and welded together to form
an assembly. The rotary forging or swaging of
tubular shapes in forming single piece designs
to near net shape appeals to engineers with an
eye toward design integrity as well as the economics
of less wasted metal. |
